The S63 AMG Coupe made its debut at the New York Auto Show |
Check every box with the live configurator
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG 4Matic coupe is ready for its North American debut. The biturbo V8 Benz delivers 577 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, and drops as much as 128 pounds over the regular S-class coupe thanks to a lightweight battery, new alloy wheels and an optional composite braking system. The configurator is live now, and there are lots of expensive options. We managed to max out at just over $205,000, and that’s without any custom designo stuff.
We drove the new S63 AMG over the summer and quite enjoyed the ride. The 5.5-liter AMG V8 reaches peak power at 5,500 rpm and peak torque at a low 2,250 rpm. It can get to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a limited top speed of 186 mph. The coupe is still a heavyweight at about 4,700 pounds, making that top speed even more impressive.
Power is routed through a seven-speed multiclutch
transmission, with one-third the power going to the front wheels and
two-thirds going back. Three driving modes include controlled
efficiency, sport and manual. A stop/start system is standard.
A
sport exhaust system gets louder through those drive-mode adjustments.
Flaps remain closed mostly in controlled efficiency but open up earlier
in sport and manual. A high-performance ceramic composite brake system
is optional for the first time.
The
American-bound S63 only comes in all-wheel drive with the 4Matic system.
Therefore, it gets the company’s Airmatic suspension, as opposed to the
Magic Body Control option that two-wheel drive models get. Mercedes
says specific front-axle kinematics have been developed exclusively for
the AMG S63 coupe.
Like most AMGs, the S63 gets a twin-blade radiator grille and a
three-dimensional air-ducting element painted in body color. A front
splitter sends more air to the engine compartment, while also reducing
lift at speed. In back, the S63 gets two sets of chrome tailpipes,
vertical air outlets and “S63 AMG” in script.
Inside,
the S63 is typical Mercedes with Napa leather, accent piping, AMG
badges and a high-resolution touchscreen. Mercedes says the new screen
makes it easier to operate the radio, telephone and navigation
functions.
The 2015 Mercedes S63 AMG coupe is on sale now, base price is $119,900.
